The day HMRC and Companies House switched off their free joint filing service. Hundreds of thousands of small companies that filed there every year now need filing software. Most of it hands you the boxes. FileYear works out what goes in them.

Try the three things that keep you safe.

Every number has a source.

Click a figure in the accounts and see the transactions, or the rule, that made it.

Nothing is posted silently.

When the sorter is not sure, it asks you. Try answering.

TRANSFER TO R PATEL, £3,000 on 19 June. Is this you paying yourself?

It left the business account and went to a personal one.

Nothing is written to the accounts until you answer.

The engine does the tax, not the AI.

Move the profit. The rule and the result change together, deterministically.

£18,123

Under £50,000: small profits rate, 19%. Same rule, same answer, every time. The AI never touches this number.

Filing for clients? Same engine, your review step.

Bookkeepers and accountants see every small client in one list. Statements go in per client, drafts land in your review queue, and nothing is submitted until you have approved it. The director signs with their own credentials, so your firm never files as agent unless you choose to.

Questions people ask first

Is FileYear an accountant?

No. FileYear is software. Whoever prepares the return, a director or their accountant, approves and submits it with their own credentials. We explain what each box means and check the numbers; we never set a tax figure on our own.

Who is it for?

UK micro-entities and the people who file for them: owner-directors doing their own books, and bookkeepers and accountants who want a faster way through the year end for their smaller clients. Not for groups, charities or companies that need an audit.

What happened to the free HMRC filing service?

HMRC and Companies House closed their joint free filing service on 31 March 2026. Every company that used it now needs filing software.

Does the AI do my tax?

The AI suggests categories and explains boxes. A separate, tested tax engine does the arithmetic the same way every time. You confirm every figure before anything is filed.

What if I get something wrong?

The health check blocks filing while anything is unbalanced or inconsistent, and tells you how to fix it. You can override a warning knowingly; you can't file an unbalanced set of accounts by accident.

When can I use it?

Spring 2027, once HMRC and Companies House have recognised the software. Join the list and we'll tell you the moment your year end is covered.
